We are Lacy and Kaden Long, proud owners of the Gentle Control Hackamore (GCH)—a family horse legacy built on generations of horse lovers and innovators.
The story of GCH began with Lacy’s grandfather, Doral J. Howard, a visionary inventor whose original concept laid the groundwork for what would later become a trusted piece of horse training equipment. That vision was brought to life by Barry Howard, Lacy’s father, whose passion for horses inspired him to develop what we now know as the Gentle Control Hackamore.
Behind that vision stood a remarkable horsewoman—Lacy’s grandmother—who was a constant source of strength, encouragement, and steady support to her husband, her family, and the horses they loved. She signed every letter and card with the words “Happy Trails,” a simple phrase that carried her warmth, grit, and lifelong devotion to the saddle. Her spirit remains woven into everything we do.
Together, Barry and his wife Lalie dedicated more than 50 years to training horses to ride, drive, and pack, as well as raising and preparing thoroughbreds for flat-track and chariot racing. Their lifelong commitment to the equestrian world made the Gentle Control Hackamore a cornerstone of our family’s story.
For the past 25 years, GCH has been shared with riders everywhere who value its gentle yet effective control. Today, we are honored to carry forward this incredible family tradition.
As a mother-and-son team, our love for horses remains at the heart of everything we do. Lacy grew up surrounded by the equestrian lifestyle, participating in 4H and Posse clubs, exploring mountain trails in Utah and Wyoming, and creating lifelong memories. Now, with her husband Nate, she enjoys watching Kaden continue this legacy by raising and training horses himself.
Kaden’s journey with horses began at a young age, inspired by his Papa Barry. He’s passionate about colt starting, connecting with the animals, and learning through each unique experience. One of his proudest achievements was completing the 100-Day Mustang Challenge, which deepened his love for horse training. Whether climbing mountain trails or sharing his expertise with fellow horse enthusiasts, Kaden approaches every ride with gratitude and joy.
We’re thrilled to share the Gentle Control Hackamore with you and your horse. To us, it’s more than just equipment—it’s a piece of our family’s heart and history. And in honor of the woman who quietly supported it all, we wish you and your horse many happy trails ahead.
